Time Is Tickle

As said, Becca and I are on library computers at the moment, and we found this gem of a conversation on one of the computers' clipboards.  People in Florida are insane.

(Best if read from the bottom, but it still makes no sense.)

Florida

Is hot.  I'm here with Becca and my grandparents.  I'm using a library computer that sounds like a Cesna.  My grandparents have this old Dell laptop they're never going to use, and I'm thinking about adopting it as a back-up or maybe something to test out Ubuntu with.

In Which Ben Gets Drunk Alone

I realized what posterous is missing.  Sure it lacks the Manhattan socialites and tight-knit geo-communities of tumblr, but who cares about that?  Do the three or four artists using tumblr really keep us wanting more?  Is it the drama explosions every two months or so?  No, posterous lacks the sad singles.  It needs the people who have been dumped and cheated on.  We don't like Nick Douglas, we like the posts telling us what a dick he is.  We like the people who are in abject misery, not because we like feeling better about our situations, but because we feel a connection to these people.  Hey, I was there, too!  You feel alone?  That's okay, because I'm here following you.  We like feeling like we're there for someone.  We like feeling nostalgic about our old feelings.  We like welling up over strangers' stories.  We like that connection.  Posts about cars and places to visit and news articles can be interesting, but there's no human behind those stories.  We're all really fragile and tumblr connects a lot of fragile people.  I know the pain that Lia feels.  I can relate to Lessons in Loneliness.  Why deny our weaknesses?  At the end of the day, what do we get for being too cool for school?  Open up.

Becca is angry at me over something I said and have already forgotten.  She hasn't tried to make up with me.  I'm drinking beer downstairs in my boxers and socks.  This makes me sad.  People have told me I'm a cold person.  This makes me sad.  They say I don't show much emotion, and I guess nobody is around enough to see.  I don't like saying I'm misunderstood, but most of my human interactions reach me when I'm wide-eyed like a deer in headlights and leave me without words.  I'm no good at this, and neither are any of you, so let your guard down once in a while.

In Which Gawker Makes Me Smile

"It's also why the most interesting thing posted so far to NonSociety, one month in, is recently-insecure designer Mary Rambin's tiff with bitch-blogger Frangy over... well, over whether two streets intersect. Spoiler: Things do not end well for poor Mary."

Russia, Georgia, and South Ossetia

It seems to me a lot of the support for Georgia regarding this issue derives from our preexisting constructions about Russia's place in the world.  They are in a position where people who are basically Russian were facing the Georgian military.  Russia felt it was its place to defend them or their (Russia's) honor or future precedence (in dealing with Russia) or something.

Let's be clear, the official Russian explanation for its attacks on Georgia are completely fabricated.  The Russian line is that Georgia was slaughtering South Ossetian civilians and Russia was simply acting as peacekeepers.  South Ossetian hospitals, however, tell a different story.  There have been only a couple hundred wounded and dead brought in, and of them, most are soldiers.

It angers me that in our era of Globalization, a Western-supported state can be brought to its knees in negotiations just because a dictatorship had the gaul to attack their defense infrastructure.  What was Sarkozy doing?  What was Bush doing?  Not nearly enough, it seems.  Read the cease-fire treaty; it's pretty insulting.

That being said, in the context of realist international politics, Russia was well within its rights to attack Georgia, had enough reason to, and showed remarkable restraint in dealing with a much weaker state.

So how far do we go for Globalization?  Russia is practicing near-Cold War Era politics to see what we'll do.  The right response is within a very thin margin, and it's never nice playing with fire.

On another note, this issue shows what weak character Bush has.  He's fine responding with crazy force to little states, but when it comes to picking on those his own size (Russia and China), he shrinks back into a meek appeaser.

Startup

I have an idea that I can't implement alone.  I could ask the people at my work to do it for me but I'd rather not.  It involves a lot of the skills needed to create a publishing site such as posterous or Tumblr (although it won't compete with these).  I foresee no money in it, but it would be fun to do and fun to run.  I can figure out hosting and whatnot, I just need people who can do the technical stuff.  Reply to this if you're interested.  (Don't all rush in at once.)

Land of the Brave

I've noticed that American television ads are all for insurance, weight loss, or cleaning supplies.

Why?

Why do people think Bale is such a good Batman?  Sure The Dark Knight was the most professional Batman movie in a long time, but as a Batman, what does this sissy baby think he's doing accidentally deadpanning through a role meant for intentioned and skilled deadpanning?

I don't like the new Batman movies.  They should have taken my advice and hired Frank Miller to make The Dark Knight Returns and it would have blown everyone's mind.
